About CJDT

The District of Columbia Commission on Judicial Disabilities (CJDT) was created by the District of Columbia Court Reorganization Act of July 29, 1970, and subsequently reorganized with its jurisdiction significantly enlarged by the following acts:

  • District of Columbia Self-Government and Governmental Reorganization Act of December 24, 1973 (known as the “Home Rule Act”).
  • Retired Judge Service Act of October 30, 1984.

The Commission’s jurisdiction extends to all active and senior judges of the District of Columbia Courts, and embraces four areas:

  1. A judge's conduct warranting disciplinary action. See Filing A Complaint
  2. Involuntary retirement of a judge for reasons of health.
  3. Evaluation of a judge who seeks reappointment upon the expiration of his or her term.
  4. Evaluation of a judge who retires and wishes to continue judicial service as a senior judge.
