Chairperson Hon. Colleen Kollar-Kotelly Testimony and Annual Reporting to the Judiciary and Public Safety Commission, Council of the District of Columbia

Tuesday, March 7, 2023

On February 15, 2023, Commission Chairperson Hon. Colleen Kollar-Kotelly testified in annual oversight hearings before the Council of the District of Columbia’s Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety. Although the Commission was created by federal statute and is not a DC agency, the Commission’s important independent oversight of judges who serve in the DC Courts is supported by the DC Mayor and DC Council.

The Chairperson’s testimony and pre-hearing submissions covered several areas including:

  • The Commission’s membership, oversight role, and statutory authority, as well as limitations on its ability to release certain information due to statutory confidentiality restrictions.
  • The Commission’s focus and achievements for FY2022 and FY2023, including certain investigations, public statements, and proactive dialogue with DC Court leadership on matters that impact the community and its access to the courts.
  • The Commission’s ongoing office modernization project, including technology implementation and upgrades, improved process and related budget planning.

Within the bounds of its confidentiality limitations, the Commission continues to provide information regarding its work to serve the public. The Commission has launched an updated page on its website that will be dedicated to annual reporting.
