The District of Columbia Commission on Judicial Disabilities and Tenure announced today that Judges Patricia A. Broderick and Neal E. Kravitz of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia are declared candidates for reappointment as Associate Judges. The Commission has begun inquiries into the qualifications of Judges Broderick and Kravitz whose terms as Associate Judges expire October 21, 2013.

Under the Home Rule Act, as amended by the District of Columbia Judicial Efficiency and Improvement Act, the Tenure Commission was given the responsibility for determining a judge’s fitness for reappointment. If the Tenure Commission finds the judge “well qualified” the judge’s term is automatically extended for fifteen years. If the Commission finds the judge “unqualified” the judge is ineligible for reappointment. If the Commission finds the judge “qualified” the President of the United States may, but is not required to, submit the nomination to the Senate for confirmation.

The Tenure Commission must submit its reappointment evaluation reports concerning Judges Broderick and Kravitz to the President by August 21, 2013. Any person or organization wishing to submit information on the qualifications of Judges Broderick and Kravitz should file such data no later than May 31, 2013. The identity of any person submitting material will be kept confidential unless expressly authorized by the person submitting the information.
